Improving Stormwater Management in Pennsylvania
Old methods of managing stormwater focused on getting runoff away from a property and into a nearby stream as quickly as possible. But this aggravated flooding, damaged the stream, and depleted our groundwater. The Campaign for Clean Water is working to improve stormwater management in our state.
The Campaign has been pressing the Department of Environmental Protection for stronger rules to promote on site management of runoff, and infiltration of rainfall into the ground. Our December 2005 comments to DEP on the draft Stormwater Management Best Management Practices Handbook include a detailed list of our recommendations.
In 2007, we have been pressing for strong regulations that would improve stormwater management and improve the requirements for erosion and sediment controls. We are also pressing to require buffers of at least 100 feet along our rivers and streams, preventing development along the water's edge. This would reduce pollution of our rivers and streams, improve water quality and aquatic habitat and reduce property damage from flooding. Our letter to the PA DEP outlines a comprehensive list of suggested changes.
