Statement of Principles
Pennsylvania’s premier natural resource is its water, including 83,000 miles of brooks, creeks and rivers, its lakes and 47 trillion gallons of groundwater. These water resources are vital to the quality of life of the communities through which they flow and to the businesses and industries that rely on them. They also provide drinking water for millions of Pennsylvania residents. Unfortunately, our streams, lakes, rivers, aquifers and wetlands are under stress from discharges, withdrawals and development projects. A recent Environmental Protection Agency study found that only 20% of our streams provide good habitat for fish.
The member groups of the PA Campaign for clean water support efforts to protect, restore, and wisely manage our water resources. We believe that sound water policies should:
- Keep clean water clean and restore damaged water quality and waterways;
- Give people easy access to usable information and provide meaningful ways to participate in decision-making about water quality and quantity policies;
- Ensure that water resource management plans and policies secure a sustainable supply of water for future uses, and protect water quality, habitat for aquatic life, and safe, clean drinking water;
- Firmly, fairly, and consistently enforce the law.
