Breaking News!
The Campaign for Clean Water opposes DEP recent action stripping Conservation Districts of their authority to review erosion, sediment, and stormwater control plans for natural gas well drilling sites in the Marcellus Shale formation. DEP also instituted an expedited stormwater permitting process that does not allow for public participation or meaningful agency review of permit applications.
36 member organizations of the Campaign signed a letter to DEP Acting Secretary John Hanger condemning DEP’s actions as a give-away to the oil and gas industry that will endanger Pennsylvania’s rivers and streams. Read more in the Campaign’s press release and letter to DEP.

Sustaining Our Buffers
Instead of our statewide Buffers 100 plan, PA DEP is now proposing a bad voluntary program for stream buffers. Developers who agree to include buffers on their site would be exempted from all review by DEP and the public of their erosion and sediment control and stormwater management plans. THIS COULD VIOLATE THE CLEAN WATER ACT AND ENDANGER OUR STREAMS. Help us convince Governor Rendell to stop this bad plan and support Buffers 100! More...
Protecting Our Streams
The Campaign is currently pushing DEP to take action on upgrade petitions that have been submitted, some as many as eight years ago. At a recent meeting with the Campaign for Clean Water, DEP Acting Secretary John Hanger instructed his staff to process these long-pending petitions for stream redesignations. In light of this instruction, the Campaign recommends that groups who have pending upgrade petitions or whose local stream may be up for redesignation, send letters to DEP to make a final "pitch" for their petitions and watersheds. In addition, you should submit any additional supporting data and information that may have been collected for the stream. More...
Preserving Pennsylvania's Wetlands
We are working to protect the state's remaining wetlands, especially those in small watersheds. Wetlands help reduce flooding and minimize erosion and pollution of our streams. Current regulations allow wetlands in small watersheds to be destroyed without any state permit or review. Learn more about how we want to change this and how you can get involved. More...
Protecting Our State's Best Streams
Exceptional Value streams are our state's best streams, and state programs are supposed to protect them. But not all streams that deserve this protection have Exceptional Value (EV) status…and some EV streams are being harmed by pollution. We're working to strengthen protection for EV streams, keeping our best streams as clean as possible. Find out what you can do to protect EV streams in your area and around the state. More... |
